In which Arn discovers the true cause of the plague of Frostmoor.
Arn Kalapunki learns from the villagers that a witch named Vigo had consulted with Lago. They fell out and argued, in no small part due to Lago’s pride. There is a rumor in the village that the witch this argument is the real source of the disease which started shortly after the witch ‘s visit.
Arn Kalapunki returns to Lago’s longhouse to ask him about the witch Vigo. Lago reacts angrily at Vigo’s name, but is surprised that he may have been responsible for the plague. Vigo commissions Arn to find Vigo and deal with him, saying that he should go so far as to kill him if necessary.
Arn Kalapunki sets off along the river to find Vigo, following the directions given to him by Lago.
However, Vigo is aware of Arn and knows that this can not be good news for him due to his conflict with Frostmoor. Vigo uses his magic to shift the paths within the woods, causing Arn to lose his way. During his delay in the maze of twisted trees, the plague worsens back in Frostmoor.
Upon arriving at the landmark he was directed to, he finds that Vigo’s residence is no longer there.
Arn Kalapunki tracks Vigo‘s mobile hut in the wilds and catches up with him.
Vigo and Arn Kalapunki have a confrontation in which Vigo reveals that he holds Lago responsible for the curse that he placed upon the people of Frostmoor. Vigo tells Arn that he will only drop the curse if Lago comes to Vigo to perform penance for breaking his bond with Vigo and nature itself.
Vigo tells Arn that Lago’s breaking of his word resulted in the spirits of the forest being wounded. Even the trees to ooze sap out of wounds. This is what Lago must acknowledge and remediate.
Arn Kalapunki hurries back to Frostmoor and relates to Lago what Vigo told him he must do. Lago refuses, saying he “spits upon the idea” of groveling to Vigo over his wounded ego.
Arn convinces Lago that the spirits of the forest real and that he should accompany Arn to visit Vigo. Lago, however, remains doubtful that Vigo is anything more than an egotistical charlatan.
Arn Kalapunki, Lago, and two of Lago’s guards travel to Vigo in the north.
Arn Kalapunki compells Vigo to take them to see the spirits of the forest. Vigo takes them all to a glad and begins to intone an incantation. Three beings emerge from the forest: a great wolf, a stone elemental, and an animated tree .. the spirits of the wood.
Vigo tells Lago to bend his knee to the spirits and while Lago is awed by the show of power but remains unwilling to supplicate them. Arn suggests the spirits produce a show of good faith .. they, via Vigo, refuse to do so. In fact, the wolf spirit lunges out and kills one of Lago’s guards.
Arn restores peace, compelling all to stand down and cease escalation. With reservation and against his personal desires, Lago kneels to the spirits as he understands the insurmountable threat they represent. The spirits accept and release the curse.
Lago expresses a humbled demeanor and viewpoint of nature to Arn Kalapunki as the curse lifts and the villagers, including Lago himself, recover from their disfigured states … causing a bond between them and their saviour, Arn, to be established.
The residents of Frostmoor urge Arn Kalapunki to stay with them, but Arn tells them he is hunting a great flying beast. One of the residents, a hunter, tells him that he saw such a best flying northwards.
