In which Arn brings order and hope back to Bleak Hall by confronting the leader of the bandits plaguing the settlement.
At the cave entrance, a flickering torchlight can be seen …. Arn Kalapunki and Refr the Crooked begin sneaking down the entrance tunnel to the icy caves, and avoid detection.
Passing a sleeping area, they emerge into the main cavern where they find the missing caravan goods. As they do so, they discover that all the bandits are here … along with the half-giant Tahir who is interrogating Sigfast trying to discover the location of treasure he has hidden.
Refr tries to convince Arn to attack them, being “true warriors”. As Sigfast’s cries echo due to the brutal torture he has been enduring, he is about to break as Arn steps out into the light, holding the spear Ulvetann and the bandits all ready for battle.
Arn, however says, “Hold, all of you, I am only here for Sigfast and the silver you have stollen from Thorhilder.”
Tahir steps forward and demands to know who he is. While this stresses Arn, he does not break and stays his ground, saying, “Did you really think I would come before you without the means to best you in single, honorable combat?!” while brandishing the spear.
Tahir, laughing deeply, accepts the challenge.
Arn Kalapunki goes toe-to-toe with the half-giant Tahir. The bandits surround them, and Arn draws the circle and boasts with grim determination, “I have faced far more fearsome foes than the likes of you, half-man. But I tell you this, this battle only ends in death for one of us … I will grant you the advantage of first blood!” and Arn cuts himself with the spear, drawing gasps from the bandits and even Tahir is impressed.
They circle the well in the cave .. until Arn darts up and over the well, driving Ulvetann down into Tahir and strikes successfully, doing harm with his bond with the weapon doing savage harm to the half-giant!
Tahir roars in pain and fury, striking in retaliation with his great club but misses as Arn taps into his building momentum and leaps away .. the well is smashed by Tahir’s strike, but leaving him open to Arn’s counter-attack, driving the spear into the back of the half-giant .. Tahir’s eyes go wide as blood pours from his mouth, the spear lodged deeply in his internal organs.
“Who are you?” Tahir demands as he dies .. Arn replies, “I am Arn Kalapunki, the Giant Slayer!”
Arn stands upon the body of the dead half-giant and demands that the bandits load the loot into the caravan carts and bring it back to Bleak Hall with him. The bandits, cowed before these events, immediately begin doing as he demanded.
Emerging, Refr the Crooked is amazed and christens Arn the Giantsbane.
They return to Bleak Hall, present the silver to Thorhilder, and they all feast in celebration! Arn Kalapunki completes his vow, and builds a stronger bond with the Ironlander people.
Refr the Crooked sings Arn’s praises at the feast and Thorhilder is completely won over.
Thorhilder as Arn Kalapunki about Thaugolos and she relates that he has been hunting in the area and that his dogged hunting of the people of the Ironlands is more than just revenge for a simple wound … and she asks why Thaugolos would be so intent on killing his entire line. This gives Arn a significant amount to consider.
Arn Kalapunki travels towards Thaugolos’ lair which he can now see in the distance.
